"Tys been letting me wear his while i'm up here, but if you can still send me one to my house i'd be amped. the suit you sent him is perfect. yesterday i surfed for 5 hours straight, it was snowing the whole time and the water was arctic, like 35 or something. and I was sweating when I got out. I've never had a suit that let me stay out for 5 hours in these kind of temps and still be warm . attached are a few pics from the first day. "

when escential was out visiting their california supporters, they were enlightened by "fins by gully". gully is a 14 year old man that foils insane fins. i noticed scuzzy (gully) needed to update his suit, and if you have ever met scuzzy, you will know that he needs a custom suit.....

we are there. it is time to open the door to full customized suits. there a couple of critical measurements and the turnaround is 2 weeks. the material is all black yamamoto in 3mm and 2mm. to get this project started, i am starting the suits at $450, and that includes everything (shipping, material, custom size, etc.). i know there is a market for these wetsuits, get one before the winter waters come in.......

malibu part3

another early morning at malibu. i got up around 530 and headed out, hoping for some kind wave. to my delight, it was waist to chest on sets. there were 15 people out, sharing the stoke. one of the surfers was daniel (the guy in the main pic). daniel is a sick surfer, and he only uses the escentials for speed, style, and glide. it was cool meeting daniel and sharing some conversation.

we ended up surfing for a couple hours, but the waves were still there. another great experience at malibu. i wish i woke up to that point.... maybe i will

the journey

well we embarked in a journey traveling down the coast. it was a 2 day journey that ended us back in santa monica.

we started with long beach to visit graham at shelter surf shop. awesome shop. graham was kind enough to have wetsuit discussions for about an hour, and all of it was very valuable info.

just down the road is newport beach, where we visited dave at almond surfboards and designs. awesome shop. i got to see the setup, boards, suits, the whole nine. i even purchased two boards to represent some almond quiver. both boards are so sick. i will post some pics when i get them on a computer. anyways, i got up early the next morning to surf blackies, the waves were sub par, but at least i got wet. the almond crew was out in full affect, and they all represented escential, i was super stoked on the loyalty to their home base and an upstart company.

drove another 20 miles south to see nick at thalia, in laguna. nick wasnt there but his shop was also awesome. we decided to walk around laguna and explore what all the hype is about. it was definitely a cool little town, with plenty of character.

drove another 20 miles on the 5 to find myself in san clemente at icons of surf. ben was a col guy and the shop was awesome, hahahaha. they had plenty of boards, and all of them wanted to be ridden.

before we could go back to santa monica, we drove another 20 miles to oceanside, to pay a visit to federoff, our suit designer. i can say one thing about the meeting, if you are not always thriving to make a perfect product, you wont get there. i gained alot of valuable info, and tried to get some plans for a front zip suit.

all in all, a great trip, and an even better trip for escential. i got back to the computer with too many thoughts about the visits. i tried to piece all the feedback, and i know good things are still to come. escential will get there....

tomorrow, malibu, then ventura, and up north.

malibu part2

couldnt sleep, got on the road around 530a.m., headed north on the pacific coast highway. made my usual u-turn and park the trusty rental car. i walked down about 50 yards, so i could see the break from the sidewalk. to my dismay, it was small, but rideable. i watched it break a couple sets, and i finally headed out when i saw the one and only surfer catch a decent ride. it was a middle age women who was on a mission, constantly looking at her watch and looking for the next ride. i surfed for 2 hours, and within that time, i caught great little rides (probably knee to waist high). by the time i got out of the water, there were 6 total surfers, if you want to call them that. but i give them all credit, they paddled out in full suits, waited for a knee high wave, and probably had just as much fun as i did.

in the afternoon, we ate lunch in beverly hills, with some relatives, and then wandered over to hollywood blvd. both places were very surreal and very busy. not my cup of tea.

later on we traveled to venice beach and checked out mollusk surf shop. very cool shop. not alot of junk on sale, and all nice original items. we then walked the venice strip, and i dont even know where to start with that place. i guess the only adjective is "chaos".

tomorrow we head to long beach to check in with shelter surf and then to newport to see dave at almond. i will let you know how the day goes....

malibu

i got to surf malibu today. what an awesome wave. i cant even imagine what that place is like when it is firing. but there were glimpses of what it could produce. to be able to glide with such ease and comfort is so refreshing. the sweet spot is known, and there is no issue always getting back to it. it just pushes and pushes, and you pull out, and you realize why you ride a log and why you stay stoked.

there were probably 6 guys out around 6am, all inviting and pretty chill. the contest started and it pushed us to "thirds", which was just as fun. i got out of the water around 8am with only complete content. i hope i dont over surf malibu, and slowly take such a magical place for granted. but that is the addiction of glide, always looking for the "perfect" wave. i am fortunate enough to be able to compare any future waves and swells to malibu.

santa monica

escential has arrived in a mix of texas air, asheville people, and a little bit of cannes, france. these are all previous places i have been, and for some odd reason i seem to compare all these places to santa monica, california. the air has a dry heat, but you can feel the cool sneaking in.

we arrived around 2pm and got to drive the coast, just for a glance at one of the most recognizable spots in the world, malibu. there was a grom competition going, but none the less, the wave was perfect. i couldn't help myself staring at the form and length of this wave, not to mention that there were a thousand people on the beach. but 4 groms got to surf the sickest right i seen all the way to the beach. They were not snaked, cut-off, sharing, or even embarking in a "party wave." I can honestly say, this was the first time i was actually jealous that I was not a part of a surf contest.

i will be here for 10 days, driving, surfing, and just living. Hopefully, i will have some interesting stories to tell.....

the wetsuit business is a very interesting one. we are dealing with a product that about 70% of the consumers are not educated on the product they are buying. we are going to have another little information session. in an earlier post, i discussed the different "types" of neoprene. yamamoto has different grades of neoprene within their product offering. escential uses #39, which is one down from the top, #45. there are ups and downs with any decision you make with wetsuit manufacturing. we chose 39 for a couple of reasons. the first is that it is a warmer material than the 45. with that decision, we compromised a little weight, because the 39 is a touch heavier than the 45. second, 39 is a stronger material, but we compromised the stretch of the 45. there isn't a "stretch" material on the market better than the 45. lastly, the 39 is a more cost efficient material than the 45. well that depends on if cost is important to you as a wetsuit buyer. so, if i haven't completely confused you yet, escential will be looking into offering a #45 suit, but we don't want to risk the chance of the suit falling completely apart, or not being very warm, or being way too expensive. we will keep you posted on the progress.

on another note, we are looking into changing the fulls, l/s springs, and s/s fulls to all fabric. therefore, the suits will not have mesh on the chest. with this change, there is an added stitch to the outside of the chest panel. the suit will have a different look, but a lot more strength. the ladies line will be all fabric as well.

the neck will also be changed. we have decided to lighten up the material used on the neck. it wont be as thick, for more comfort, and it wont effect the flush prevention.

lastly, the stripes are going to be moved to the left sleeve (like the front zip jacket). this design change will only be for the fulls, l/s springs, and s/s fulls. the stripes will stay on the chest for the farmer john, short john and vest.

i am well prepared for my solo journey across the country. there was a beautiful sunrise in florida as i took off. my thoughts were mixed but they were definitely in the rear view of my mind
spent twelve hours on the road, and ended up in some dumpy town outside of houston, so thankful I don’t live here. the thought of taking shots of all the “welcome” signs crossed my mind, and then I realized that such an activity was highly popular amongst women. my theory was confirmed as I left a rest area in texas, there were two attractive women posing for a picture underneath the sign.
my plan is to reach el paso and maybe beyond tomorrow.

woke up early and got some coffee, this was the sight at first light…
houston wasn’t completely forsaken. i was fortunate to pick up a classic paul simon cd that increased morale.
i cruised through the gnarliest part of texas at noon, there is nothing out there save the little bit of soul that passed through tagged on to the back of my trusty toyota
the desert seems to have an influence on your conscience. though i was flying through in a pretty trust vehicle, humbling thoughts susceptibility were flowing.
el paso reminds me of san jose, costa rica. but it’s that brand new flava
i stopped in new mexico. i was hoping to see the stars but it was cloudy.

i am going to make my ascent into cali today. if all goes as planned i’ll be there before sun dizz
new mexico and arizona were crazy. the heat was so intense and the landscape was so uneventful. non-the-less beautiful. i’ve concluded that your relationship to the Son is what brings beauty. i saw an awesome sunset and sunrise in new mexico
ok man, the escential train has arrived in cali. i am going to be the only kook in the water tomorrow just grinding all over the place
